The monkey baby quilt is taking shape

A couple weeks ago I teased you all with a post about a baby quilt I’m working on that features a giant monkey hanging from a tree branch. Well today comes the reveal of the top.

The top isn’t completely done because while the applique is fused in place, I still need to finish stitching around the edges to keep it there. I chose a dark brown thread that I’m going to use across the entire applique piece. It blends in with the brown of the monkey and helps define the lighter yellow fabric against the green and gray background.

I’m still deciding how to quilt it, but I’m leaning toward a tiny stipple on the monkey, cross hatching in the background, swirls in the yellow border and curved palm leaves in the green border. It will be my most ambitious free motion quilting project to date. I’m pretty excited about it.

This pattern is my own design, and I’ve had some interest from others who have seen it who would like a copy of the applique templates and pattern. Leave a comment if you would like the pattern. If there is enough interest, I’ll write up it up and post it in the Patterns section of the website.

I would love the pattern for the monkey. It would look great on one of my ‘quilts for kids’ quilts.
